Recently, I received an email from the Learning Abroad Center notifying me of my acceptance to Thammasat University in Bangkok, Thailand. As ecstatic as I was to receive such good news, I quickly realized I have only about a month to prepare for this six month trip!
Only thing that came into my mind was GO FOR IT!
I always knew I was going to study abroad in college, but my path of “figuring out the right major” always held me back from a lot of things. Last year, when I was planning out classes for rest of college, I couldn’t bear the thought of not being able to study outside of US. I told myself no matter what happens I will fit in study abroad before I graduate. So, here I am a year later meticulously reading my study aboard information over and over to prepare for my trip to Bangkok.
Out of all the places in the world why study in Bangkok, Thailand? Well, there's no simple answer to this question.
I originally wanted to study in Europe—France, Spain, or Italy, which would have been nice, but not practical for me at the moment to take out such a huge loan to merely survive. For a short time I researched Australia, but maybe I would cut myself short by going to country where people speak English...it wouldn't be very challenging. I can always go there to visit. It wasn’t until a year ago a friend studied abroad in Bangkok that Thailand crossed my mind. Since then, I did extensive research and in the end I knew it was a decision I could never regret.
Thailand was never colonized, so in way it kept intact its original culture and heritage. Bangkok itself is really an incredible place. It is one of the most cultural, spiritual, diplomatic, commercial, and educational hub.

I feel that in studying in Bangkok I will be able to experience the interesting dichotomy between traditional and modern. Being in such as central location in SE Asia, I will be able to explore not only the diversity of various regions in Thailand but surrounding countries such as Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia as well. Exploring the rich cultures of the surrounding countries is definitely one of my aspirations for staying abroad!
One thing I love about Thailand is that majority of the population practice Buddhism. I always admired this religion. Actually, in my opinion, I don’t see Buddhism as a religion at all; it is more like “a way of life.” I really want to learn various aspects of Buddhism and its influence on Thai people’s daily life.
There are several other reasons I picked Thailand…the weather…lifestyle…FOOD (the fresh herbs, spices and fish, YES!!)!!
I am so excited…I can’t wait ^_^
